Australia is a country in the Southern Emisphere with around 23 million inhabitants, which was used as a penal colony during the British Empire. Although there is no official language, English is the language used par excellence due to the influence of the British colonists.
However, this has not always been like this; between 200 and 300 indigenous Australian languages are thought to have existed at the time of first European contact, of
which only about 70 have survived. Many of these are exclusively spoken
by older people and only 18 Indigenous languages are still spoken by all
age groups.
Australia
is considered a megadiverse country because it includes a diverse range
of habitats: from semi-arid areas or deserts to alpine healths or
tropical rainforests.
